Janne Robberstad

Welcome to my site! I work as an eco-designer, an artist, as a teacher and as a researcher, and creating, or ARTING as I prefer, makes me happy! This is both a portfolio of things I´ve made and a blog meant to inspire.

IF´s theme this week is PROPAGATE. I didn´t know what the word meant, so I looked it up:

To cause to continue or multiply by generation, or successive production; — applied to animals and plants; as, to propagate a breed of horses or sheep; to propagate a species of fruit tree.

Kreativitet avlar kreativitet… Creativity propagates creativity.

This has been been my own home-made motto for years (in Norwegian since I didn´t know the English word), and by that I mean, that creativity is way of thinking. If you use your energy on creativity, you don´t run dry on ideas. On the contrary, new ideas, more and more, will be born into your imagination.

Creativity is an attitude towards life, if you will. I mean that it is not just a way of approaching art- or craft-making. It is how you meet life, how you greet it. How you deal with the challenges and surprises life has in store for you.

For over a decade now, I´ve been making my own calender-journals. In the beginning they were strictly written in black on white paper. Later it´s turned around, when there is color on every square cm in the book.

The one thing that all the books have in common is the spiral on the cover. The spiral has been an ancient symbol of fertility in many cultures. I´ve extended the meaning of the word fertility to not just be about giving birth to babies, but also include the creative mind giving birth to ideas. To me, the spiral is the symbol of creativity.

Also because in my experience creativity works like a spiral, one idea is born, another, then three more, then ten more, spreading like ripples in water, or add the  time-dimension, and you have… the spiral!

I´ve usually sewn the covers, and the one above is on one of my early home-made  calenders, from 1997. Below are the backs of some other years.

well, Janne . . . I couldn’t agree more — creativity DOES have a way of begging for more time and creative fun. You seem to have an endless supply of inspiration and dedication for fantastic creativity . . . love your “propagate” piece!

    Hello Janne,

I like your attitude and your brain and your art. Myself, I plod through my normal life with my brain on the future, never in the present, waiting for my chance to make a little ‘art’.

The books are beautiful, I envy your approach to art, trying as much as you can grasp.

I’m sorry to have to tell you but I gave you a Blog Award for being an inspiring artist.

See the above link for details. It’s a chance to share your favourite artists.
