Experiment gone not-so-great…

By spotogspindel | October 21, 2010

I bought this nice accordion book in London at an Art Studio-shop, and wanted to do something special with it.

I´ve been wanting a bright, hot pink book for my calender, and had read that one can dye paper with textile dye. The color is reactive, meaning it will go in to the fiber instead of surrounding it like a pigment color would. If you dye paper this way, you can just leave it to dry, and the pages won´t stick together. I had read all this in a book I got this summer. And I cannot for the life of me find this book, and could therefore only follow my memory on the process…

Mixing the dye with salt and warm water. And then putting the book in. That is, to make sure the dye came into contact with all the pages, I had to flip through every one of them, this being an accordion-book. Anyhow, the glue in every fold and the paper itself was very soft, and became very weak when in contact with water. Some of the pages just ripped, and fell apart at the seams.

All the pages are fished back out of the dye, and laid to dry on a piece of plastic on a warm floor.

A week later, and it´s dry. The yellow color is silk-paint, by the way. I added some of it along the edges, to get an orange color for variation. Anyway, as you can see, the pages aren´t really straight-angled anymore, and there is no way this book is going back in it´s case.  Well, you can´t win them all… I´m going to have to figure out a good way of using it, without bruising it (rhyme!) too bad.

Since I made another book from scratch the same evening, I have till March to figure this one out….

Yeah, I like the color too. Too bad the page fell apart. I´ll have to figure out how to fix it, and make it work anyway.
