DOF decoration

By spotogspindel | October 22, 2009

DOF is a huge shipping company here in Norway, actually all over the world. With offices in 14 countries, and  a fleet that sails all of the seven seas. Their main office is in Bergen, Norway, and they have just moved into a new location. I have had the honor of decorating their new space. Three floors. It is such a humbeling job.

Here are some pictures from the office, of the artwork itself and installing some of the artwork.

This is in the reception area on the 6th floor:

Since DOF work globally, we wanted a picture of the world. And since it is a shipping company, I chose to fill the land with waves, to give it a maritime feeling. It is printed on hard plastic, that comes about 1 cm out from the wall. (There is a remarkable amount of islands north of Canada I never noticed before…)

Here is another piece I made for the common area on the 6th floor.

The office lies in Bergen, which has been a very important shipping-city for centuries. One of Bergen´s landmarks is Bryggen (the quay). Built in the 17th century, it is now on Unescos world Heritage list. I used it as inspiration for this copper-relief. All 14 houses are sized down in accordance with the real thing. All houses are made of solid copper,  which I have oxidized in different ways. On some of them I added brass-mesh.

All-in-all it is about  3,5 meters long, and I am quite satisfied with how it turned out.

Oh, and the red chairs will be replaced by a black sofa.

On the 6th floor is also where you find the board-room, and here I have two pictures; one textile wall-hanging, and this paper/metal-collage:

And a detail:

The black hair is horse-hair, and the metal-mesh is copper.

How many guys does it take to install frosted foil on a glass-wall? At least two, and apparently three when the pictures are big. Some of these photos were taken by people working in DOF, and I have continued the work with them, adjusting them to what we needed them for.

And here it is up:

A couple of these photographs were taken by people working in the DOF Corporation. They had a photo-competition for a calender, and they asked me to use some of them. I have worked quite a bit with them, to adjust them to their new media: print on frosted foil.

Here is another meeting-room. As you can see, they have hardly had the time to move in yet.

Moving down to the 5th floor, we find DOF Management, and here is some of the art in this story.

Here is a meeting-room picture. As you can see, they are already hard at work. “Challenging the world seas” is one of their mottos, and that is also the text on this picture.

And here is a close-up:

The interior is very strictly black and white, and they wanted some color to soften up the institutional feel. This canvas of two old ships add some color on the 5th floor.

Here is another meeting-room on the 5th floor. In the back-panel you can see one of their specialities: the “underwater-tractor”. The text on the front panel states their vision in a few words:

integrity -safety – excellence – teamwork – respect

This is from the public area on the 4th floor. The earth reflecting the sky “The floating world” is mine, the small one they had before (although it looks very much like something I would have made) The floating world is a photoshoped photograph printed on aluminum. You can see the metal shine through the image, which creates a very interesting effect.

This is a canvas-picture, at the end of the sight-line of a corridor on the 4th floor.

For the meeting room on the 4th floor, there is a 180 degrees horizon-picture from Austevoll.

And in another corridor, this picture is hopefully brightening the day:

And here is a close-up:1842
