Composition

By spotogspindel | February 19, 2011

This is a little experiment I did with the students earlier this year. Four groups were given a group of color-copied pictures of various size and theme, and asked to put them together into a composition they were happy with. After about ten minutes, we had a look at them , and the groups presented their thought on why they had made their choices.

Here are the pictures before they were asked the following questions:

*What is your main focus point? Is this what you want to be the main focus point?

*Where are you on the scale of “calm-chaos”? Is this where you want to be?

Working this way with composition is very interesting. Most of the time we do it without thinking at all. So having to answer these questions, might help “tidy” up and sharpen the focus on what it is you want to express.

With very few adjustments we improved the compositions, unfortunately I don´t have any after-pictures. Tilting an object here, moving another a cm to the left there, giving small gaps of “air” to calm the whole.
