Christmas is… handmade ornaments

By spotogspindel | December 6, 2009

For the very first time in my life, I am part of a swap-group. Michelle invited me when she was visiting in October. I am so excited about it! And have been thinking back and forth and trying out bits and pieces.

The main word for Christmas for me is love. (As for the rest of the year, really.) That is why I chose the little “slogan” of love true. It is a kind reminder to stay true to yourself and the ones you love. I printed it on a piece of paper, glued it to the back of a glass-bead, let it dry, and cut around it. I emerged the bead under chiffon I sowed on to the main fabric.

I first printed a flowery paisley pattern on a steel-blue silk. Then appliqued on another piece of embroidered silk.

On the back is a little poem I wrote myself:

No man is an island if he dares to love.

I embroidered it on a hand-dyed silk fabric left-over from a costume I made some years ago.

I sowed the two pieces together while adding turquoise beads.

And added another couple of beads at the bottom, hanging like a raindrop…

On the top I added a duck-blue feather and a little berry-like something I found at my local craft-store.

And here is the result:

I think the colors, the wavy shape on the embroidery, the text, the details is both typical of me, and of my island. Now I am just hoping the others in the swap-group will like my little heart. And I am so excited to see what the others made. I´ll show you of course, as they come in the mail :-)

By the way:

Below is the picture where I first used this little poem. I made it for an exhibition in 2005 called Horizons, and it´s been hanging in my entrance for a while. But yesterday my old best-friend from when I was a little girl came to visit, and she really liked it. So now it´s on her wall instead :-)

(Kjærleik means love in norwegian)

Wow, wow, wow! Your ornament is so beautiful! I really LOVE the randomness of the design. If you ever decide to sell them, I’ll be first in line. I think you could easily get this design published in any mixed media or fabric arts “type” of magazines. You should seriously think about submitting it for consideration.

    Great job!

    Blessings, Tracy

Your ornament is beautiful-your choice of colors, textures, materials, amazing. I especially like how you have incorporated the beadwork. Thanks for sharing. Thanks also visiting my blog and for your kind comment!
